‘Squared Away: Composing in 1:1’ photowalk
Why Square?
Ditch the rectangle rut! Shooting in 1:1 aspect ratio (square format) rewires your eye for balance, symmetry, and bold choices. No more “I’ll crop later”—compose square in-camera to spark fresh ideas. Inspired by Hasselblad legends and Instagram minimalists, it’s perfect for honing composition without gear upgrades. Expect simpler, stronger shots that pop.
Preparation: Set Up Your Square View
- DSLR Users: Flip to Live View on LCD for 1:1 crop overlay (menu > aspect ratio). For viewfinder, DIY mask with tape/cardboard (equal sides blocked). Pro tip: Bring extra batteries—Live View guzzles batteries!
- Mirrorless Folk: Toggle 1:1 in EVF/LCD settings—real-time magic with exposure preview. Test for lag in low light.
- Smartphone Squad: Tap the ratio icon in your camera app (e.g., iPhone: 1:1; Samsung: Square mode). Use grid for thirds—watch for glare!
Limitation Alert: All crop from native sensors, so slight resolution dip (no big issue).
Composition Hacks for Square Success
- Center Stage: Embrace dead-centre subjects—squares love symmetry (think reflections, faces, or lone trees).
- Negative Space Ninja: Fill with “nothing” to amplify your focal point; the equal sides demand breathing room.
- Shape Hunt: Spot circles, triangles, or lines—the format’s geometry amps them up.
- Rule of Thirds Twist: Off-center works too, but test golden ratio overlays if your camera has them.
- Theme Twist: Urban walk? Frame doors/windows as “boxes within boxes.” Nature? Symmetrical leaves or paths.
